Today I declared a first-of-its-kind Disaster Declaration on Gun Violence so that we can treat #GunViolence as the public health crisis it is.
Over 4th of July weekend, more people in NYS were shot than died of COVID. Victims of gun violence are disproportionally Black and Brown New Yorkers. We are losing young people tragically and needlessly.
This is a national problem, but New York will address it head-on, comprehensively and creatively because that’s the New York way.
We will invest in our at-risk communities, expand proven violence intervention programs, take action against illegal guns coming from other states, work to hold the gun industry liable and more.
